SUPERSTRUCTURES Engineers + Architects
New York City's most prominent firm dedicated to the restoration and renewal of
facades, curtain walls, roofs, plazas, parking structures, and infrastructure

We work on more exterior restoration projects than any other firm in New York City

Since our founding in 1981, we’ve successfully completed thousands of restoration projects for the region’s most prestigious and demanding clients, including some of the most prominent and historically significant structures in the city.

In the interest of public safety, the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) has established three laws related to the inspection of facades, parking structures, and retaining walls within the five boroughs:

Local Law 126 of 2021 (Parking Structures)
This law mandates periodic assessment of all parking structures every six years to ensure they’re maintained in a safe condition. Learn more at NYCLocalLaw126.com

Local Law 11 of 1998 (Facades)
Also known as the Facade Inspection & Safety Program (FISP), this law addresses the condition of exterior walls of buildings taller than six stories. Learn more at LocalLaw11.com

Local Law 37 of 2008 (Retaining Walls)
Similar to FISP, retaining walls must be inspected and required maintenance performed every five years.

Getting it Wrong on Paper
We’ve posted previously about the importance of “getting it right on paper”—working out every restoration detail in drawings before construction commences. But speculative designers like Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Archigram, and Lebbeus Woods have had the luxury of getting it wrong on paper. Their “paper architecture” tends to skirt any responsibility to produce buildable, functional structures.

Lunch & Learn Covers Through-Wall Flashings
"Through-Wall Flashings and Transition Membranes” was the subject of last week’s Lunch & Learn, presented by Robert Bleistein of York Flashings. The 70 SUPERSTRUCTURES team members in attendance expanded their knowledge of flashing challenges and solutions, earned CEUs, and enjoyed a free lunch in our presentation space.

Restoring the Whole Arsenal of History
Some buildings are “all of the above” in terms of their architectural details and array of materials. That was the case with today’s “Throwback Thursday” profile: the MacIntyre Building (R. H. Robertson, 1892). SUPERSTRUCTURES’ restoration of the structure was honored with a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award in 2010.
