City College of New York, Compton & Goethals Halls
      New York, NY

SUPERSTRUCTURES conducted a survey of all roofs of Compton-Goethals Hall (George B. Post, 1908/1930) and provided repair and replacement recommendations. A New York City Landmark, the building features a slate tile roof. The investigation report provided an overview of existing roof conditions, verified the scope of replacement work, and provided recommendations for restoration of four types of roofing systems with cost estimates. The slate roof failure was caused by a combination of improper installation, natural slate imperfections, and moisture-related deterioration of the underlying plywood decking. The lower roofs had exceeded their service life and exhibited age-related deterioration. Although the building is exempt from NYC energy code requirements, the proposed roofing insulation was increased to achieve an R-30 rating without altering the structure’s historic characteristics.
