Bronx Community College, Colston Hall
Bronx, NY

SUPERSTRUCTURES provided investigation, design, and construction administration services to restore the facade of Colston Hall, originally a dormitory designed by Marcel Breuer & Associates in 1961. A FISP Cycle 8C examination identified various unsafe conditions in the building’s cast-in-place concrete, brick masonry, stucco, and aluminum-framed glazing. Restoration work included: removal and replacement of cracked, spalled, and displaced brick masonry; repair of spalled concrete; restoration of stucco soffits; window repairs; and sealant joint restoration. The project also included: reinstallation of guardrails; stone and masonry repointing; repair of deteriorated reinforcement of exterior spandrel beams and balconies; and restoration of deteriorated retaining walls (essential to the terraced site of the building).
