      Concrete, Heal Thyself

Detail of a concrete crack “healing” itself

At SUPERSTRUCTURES, we’re always on the lookout for innovative technologies that advance the art and science of restoration.

One intriguing material we’ve been following:  concrete that can repair itself.  Briefly, this self-healing concrete uses an enzyme found in human red blood cells which reacts with CO2 from the atmosphere to form calcium carbonate crystals, effectively “healing” cracks before they grow and lead to more widespread failure. This article offers more details.

But what about the cracks, spalls, and degradation of millions of square feet of exposed concrete that already exist in foundation walls, parking structures, and apartment balconies?

Well, right now, we’re employing cutting-edge technologies for concrete restoration. We’re using 360-degree cameras, advanced optical and laser imaging, and proprietary software for evaluation and quantification of concrete deterioration and quality assurance during remediation.

In the future, concrete may take care of itself. But until then, contact us.
