Fix, Then File

As part of NYC’s Get Sheds Down initiative (commencing Monday, January 26) the city’s Department of Buildings (DOB) will implement changes that directly impact how sidewalk shed permits are issued, renewed, and tracked. They’ll require more frequent sidewalk shed filings, additional compliance steps, and greater coordination between owners, contractors, and design professionals.

Conveniently, SUPERSTRUCTURES’ mission has always been to get sidewalk sheds down as soon as possible. That’s why we advocate “Fix, Then File.”

Typically, sidewalks sheds are installed in response to a filed LL11/ FISP report that identifies a safety concern related to the facade. But if owners regularly attend to the condition of their building’s envelope, then periodic filing of a FISP report becomes a formality—rather than a rude awakening.

If you own a car, you know that it requires regular maintenance—more than just taking it in when it’s due for a state inspection. Maintaining your building’s facade in good repair should also be a continuous, strategic process—rather than a commodity that’s only sought during each five-year cycle.

Our team of experienced architects and engineers includes more Qualified Exterior Wall Inspectors (QEWIs) than any other firm. They can help owners navigate and comply with FISP: investigating the condition of the building’s facade, specifying, and completing necessary restoration work, and managing required filings. That keeps you ahead of the curve, minimizing the time that a shed is in place—and NYC is on your case.
