Throwback Thursday: Grand Central Terminal

This week, we’re looking back over 20 years to when SUPERSTRUCTURES worked on one of the city’s most iconic destinations: Grand Central Terminal.

A storied transportation hub, the terminal was designed by architects Reed and Stern in 1913 and has been designated a New York City and National Historic Landmark. After nearly a century of serving millions of New Yorkers and visitors, the structure required restoration to keep it on track.

Working with the MTA’s chosen contractor, KAFKA Construction, Inc., SUPERSTRUCTURES developed and implemented a restoration plan for the building.

The project included restoration of masonry walls, interior courtyards, and areaways, and limestone repairs on the west and south facades. The scope also included restoration of roofs and skylights above the main concourse and reinforcement of the structural support for the Vanderbilt statue.

We’re proud to have contributed to the restoration of this irreplaceable part of the city’s history.
