NYC Initiative Battles Sidewalk Sheds

The “Get Sheds Down” initiative just announced by NYC Mayor Adams and DOB Commissioner Oddo is intriguing—especially in concert with new rules that allow use of UAVs (drones) for building inspections.

“Get Sheds Down” incentivizes building owners not to leave sidewalk sheds—nearly 400 miles of which line the city’s streets—up for years at a time, while encouraging alternatives like construction netting and new shed designs that are less of an eyesore.

We join the city in working to minimize the intrusion of sidewalk sheds. Our systematic approach to facade inspection and restoration (with our emphasis on pre-construction preparation) offers the potential to get each project completed, scaffolding dismantled, and the sidewalk unobstructed as rapidly as possible.

We also strive to keep building owners informed on the latest requirements of New York’s Facade Inspection Safety Program (FISP) to help them identify envelope issues early and stay ahead of the inspection curve, keeping the need for long-term sheds in check.
