North Building, Hunter College
New York, NY

The North Building (Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon, 1941) is a 17-story, steel-framed academic facility in the Upper East Side Historic District. SUPERSTRUCTURES conducted a FISP Cycle 8C critical examination of the building’s brick masonry and limestone-clad facade. Restoration work to address facade deficiencies included: removal and replacement of cracked and spalled masonry; masonry repointing; mechanical anchorage of brick masonry and displaced stone; expansion joint replacement; and joint sealant replacement. The project also included: scraping and painting of steel lintels and spandrel beams, including removal and replacement of brick masonry, flashing, and weeps; and installation of new brick masonry, flashing, and weeps at existing shelf angles.
