The New Yorker Hotel, completed in 1929, was the city's tallest hotel for many years at 43 stories. The building has a recent history of leaks and attempts to repair them, primarily due to the construction of the building, which consists of terra cotta and single wythe (layer) brick masonry cladding over two wythes of hollow terra cotta block back-up. Typically a facade masonry barrier wall includes two wythes of brick. SUPERSTRUCTURES conducted a leak investigation including probes and water testing and submitted recommendations for correction of the problem. A pilot program of waterproofing on one terrace has been implemented.
