26 Federal Plaza
New York, NY

SUPERSTRUCTURES was retained by contractor Synthesis, Inc. to consult on the restoration of the Lafayette Street steps and pedestrian plaza at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Office Building at 26 Federal Plaza (Alfred Easton Poor and Kahn & Jacobs, 1969). The steps are composed of curved, eight-foot, 1,130-pound sections of granite which had become displaced due to the lack of proper expansion joints. The firm provided investigation, design, and construction administration services to correct this displacement. Restoration work included: removing all existing raked mortar joints; realigning all treads; filling all joints with backer rods and non-sagging polyurethane sealant; and installing stainless steel rods set in epoxy mortar between each tread. The project also included repair of cracked granite pavers and stone repointing.
