Newtown High School
Queens, New York

Newtown High School is a large secondary school in the residential neighborhood of Elmhurst in western Queens, constructed in 1921 and designed by C.B.J. Snyder in a Flemish Renaissance Revival style. The structural steel frame has terra cotta tile back-up, and the face brick masonry is laid in common bond. The exterior masonry, parapets, roofs, windows, and doors were found to be in fair to poor condition. SUPERSTRUCTURES provided investigation and design services for the rehabilitation or replacement of the deteriorated aspects of the building, including complete reconstruction of the four turrets on the main tower. The project was awarded a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Project Award for 2011 by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
