LUCY MOSES AWARDS – 2012

SUPERSTRUCTURES is very pleased that two of our projects were honored with the prestigious Lucy Moses Preservation Award by the New York Landmarks Conservancy on April 25th. The awards recognize extraordinary contributions in restoring the beauty and utility of New York's great architecture. The two projects recognized were:

The Rod Rogers and Duo Multicultural Arts Center, New York, NY
Client: NYC Department of Design and Construction

This 5-story building built in 1889, located in the city's only designated Cultural District, was clearly in need of some TLC. The building has an unusual facade which includes large French windows on the second floors, classical detailing, and a circular iron fire escape stairway leading down from a loggia on the fourth floor, screened from the outside by perforated iron mesh. The exterior restoration involved the recreation of the cornice and the balconies, replacement of the windows with historically appropriate materials, structural repairs to the fire escape and analysis of paint in order to match the historic color.

Newtown High School, Queens, NY
Client: NYC School Construction Authority

Newtown High School is a large secondary school in the residential neighborhood of Elmhurst, in western Queens. It is one of Queen's most prominent buildings, and occupies an entire city block. Newtown High School will celebrate its 115th anniversary in 2012. The award winning renovation project consisted of comprehensive exterior envelope repairs. Considerable skill in documentation and construction was demonstrated with the replacement of poly-chrome terracotta ornament and reconstruction of the four secondary turret and their copper roofs.

ICRI AWARD
SUPERSTRUCTURES is pleased that our restoration work on the Park Hudson Parking Garage in North Bergen, New Jersey has been honored by the International Concrete Repair Institute with its 2011 Award for Excellence in the Repair of Parking Structures.

The rehabilitation of the four-story structure was recognized due to the logistical challenges of its cliffside location and the collaboration between SUPERSTRUCTURES’ engineers, the owner and the contractor. In its citation ICRI cited the project’s “focused preplanning and the implementation of unique means and methods to ensure safety, quality, production and, ultimately, a safe, sound revitalized structure for the benefit of residents.”

APTI'S NEW PRESIDENT
SUPERSTRUCTURES is pleased to announce that our Director of Conservation & Material Science, Joan Berkowitz has been elected President of The Association for Preservation Technology International. Joan assumed her newest leadership role at their annual conference "Heritage on the Edge Sustaining Building, Landscapes and Communities” held in Victoria, BC, Canada, October 11-16, 2011.
